Stage 3

Past experience has shown that having an on-site Field Safety co-ordinator for the duration of the project is the best way to ensure that safety is seen to be a high priority.

Field Safety Management

The role of TGH Safety Consulting personnel on the construction site is to ensure contractor personnel give due consideration to safety and the protection of the environment.

TGH Safety Consulting creates and maintains a positive attitude among contract personnel by promoting Construction management’s genuine concern for safe work practices and activities.

In seeking to achieve this goal, TGH Safety Consulting supports and assists contractors to develop positive solutions to any issues that may arise.  They recognize high safety standards of groups or individuals.  They maintain open and continual communication among contracting groups, project management and the client. They participate in immediate investigation of any incidents/near misses to prevent recurrence.

Role of Field Safety Coordinator

Some things to think about as a Contractor on a project or a manager of a small manufacturing site:

How often do you do spot checks to see if your employees are working in a safe manner with respect to policies and procedures you put in place?  When you find they are in compliance, do you reward safety on the job?

Impromptu Inspections

Impromptu Inspections are informal spot checks, assessing contrator’s performance regarding the permit system, PPE, housekeeping, rules and procedure compliance.  Areas that require improvement are identified and solutions agreed upon among parties concerned.  These inspections are aimed at positive reinforcement of overall safety programs and give recognition where due.

Toolbox Meetings

How often do your employees meet to talk about safety concerns?  At TGH Safety Consulting we believe daily Toolbox Meetings show the worker that Safety is the first priority to daily activities.  We have a variety of communication tools and resources to make these talks interesting and interactive.

Site Safety Inspections

Are you as a contractor/manager prepared to carry on Site Safety Inspections and interact with Ministry personnel during the duration of the contract?  Wouldn’t you want to know about problems before they occur?  At TGH Safety Consulting our employees participate in formal safety inspections where a specific area is targeted at a predetermined time.  The objectives of a formal inspection are to:

Contract Enforcement

The potential for serious conflict or disregard of the safety expectations must be considered.  The authority and procedures used in enforcing contract requirements with regards to the right to remove personnel or deny access to the site would be defined and carried out as per the Safety, Health & Environmental Plan.

The suspension of any work activity for safety reasons by TGH Safety Consulting staff is viewed as a “last resort”.  In situations where the potential for serious harm or damage becomes a reality, and existing controls prove ineffectual, the activity is suspended until such controls can be put in place to ensure safe working conditions.

Progress Meetings

TGH Safety Consulting personnel attend progress meetings with the client and project management to ensure we are up to date with any contract bottlenecks, substantial variations and issues that could impact on Safety on the Job.

Hazard Recognition & Reconciliation

TGH Safety consulting believes that hazard recognition and reconciliation are one of the cornerstones of any safety program. This concept has been successfully used on large and small projects with great results.

Accident Reporting & Investigation

All accidents including near misses, which are reported, are investigated immediately and corrective actions implemented to avoid a repeat incident.

Accurate documentation of all on site accidents protects Project Management against claims for accidents that may not have occurred on the project.

During the orientations, and where necessary, progress meetings, the requirement to report all incidents is re-emphasized.

Liaise With OSH Services

For the duration of the contract, TGH Safety Consulting can liaise with OSH Services for site visits and supply any relevant information/documentation that may be requested.

Accurate documentation and statistics are maintained and monitored.

An important element of a successful programme is good housekeeping.  Nothing sends a clearer psychological signal to contractors and their employees than relative orderliness in project work areas.  Slips, trips and falls are the leading accident cause on construction sites.  Litter and debris conceal tripping hazards and increase the possibility of other injuries.

TGH Safety Consulting promotes the importance of good housekeeping and ensures that a high standard is maintained as part of its role on a construction site.
